Weather and Seasonality
The best trekking season to Nepal is between October to mid-May. During this time, altitudes and daytime temperatures are within comfortable ranges for walking. There are clear skies most of the time despite occasional rain and snow occurrences. Daytime temperatures range from 150C to 350C around the Kathmandu valley. Temperatures go to around 100C and cooler as you approach higher elevations. Different season present different hiking advantages.
Autumn or Post Monsoon: this is the period between mid September to November and is the main trekking season in this region. Average day temperatures are 200C around the Kathmandu valley. Trekking days are sunny while skies are clear presenting great mountain views. Nights tend to be cooler and temperatures can go below -100C if you are within the high altitude regions.
Winter: the period between December towards the end of February is characterized by cooler conditions. However, it is still an ideal trekking time in Nepal. It is characterized by clear skies offering the best mountain views. However, nights are very cold, with temperatures going as low as -200C on the high altitude areas. Days are sunny and pleasant. Another advantage of visiting during this time is that trails are less busy, with very few travelers. Maximum daytime temperatures in Kathmandu are 190C.
Pre-Monsoon: From March to May both night and day, temperatures are generally warmer. However, there are windy conditions in the afternoon. On top of that, the lowlands are very hot while temperatures in the Kathmandu valley rise to 350C. Such conditions make hiking slow and challenging. Despite the weather, the region is decorated with blooming flowers, making it a very popular trekking period.
You should always remember that weather is very unpredictable in any mountainous region. As such, you should be always equipped and prepared to deal with whatever is thrown your way, beyond the above described weather conditions.
What to Carry
Considering the length of this trek, it is advisable to pack lightly. Something between 10 to 15 kg would be ideal. Consider your load before you throw in that pair of jeans or that bottle of shampoo. As such, avoid any unnecessary piece of luggage, otherwise, you might have to discard them along the way.
Thermal underwear, a down jacket and fleece jacket are a must since the temperatures are very cold in the Himalayas after 3,000 m regardless of the season. Carry three t-shirts and two long pants, all made from synthetic not cotton that dry fast. Include another light fleece or warm jumper.
For footwear, carry sturdy hiking boots that you have lightly broken into, sandals and sneakers for the evening and trekking socks. You will also require gloves, a rain coat, polarized sun glasses, sun hat and woolen hat. It is essential to include a good sleeping bag with a rating of -20 C/0 F. if you are going during winter, include a thermal liner for your sleeping bag.
Toiletries should be travel-size such as lip balm, a good sunscreen, tissues, and travel towel. You may also include baby wipes. They come in very handy for those days when it is impossible to take a shower.
A first aid kit is also very necessary. it should include antibiotics, diarrhea treatment and adhesive bandages to cover your blisters. Water bottles especially the 1 liter range with purification tablets inside is a safe and reliable way, instead of buying bottle water from the lodges. You will also be conserving the environment.
